Report from Selkirk Youth Clubs first game of the season at Berwick Saturday 26 August.

The Youth Club made the journey to Berwick last Saturday with a new coaching team of Jason Hendrie and Ciaran Beattie who are assisting Graham Marshall this season.

A young Youth Club team who were missing some of their seasoned players due to injury or other commitments put up a good show at Scremerston against a relatively young Berwick Team.

With captain David Purves on the injured list Craig MacDougall took over the responsibility of leading the team out. This was the first game for a number of players who were stepping up from last years under 16’s and also the first 15 a side game of the season.

The Youth Club started well with everyone keen to be involved and the pace was hectic over the first 20 minutes of the half with both sides having the chance to take the lead. The young half back pairing of Scott Tough & Darren Scott were combining well with Guy Patterson showing some aggressive running. They were backed up by the back row of Matthew Robertson, Scott MacDonald and Robert MacGregor who pressurised the Berwick backs all afternoon. Craig MacDougall was unlucky to just miss a couple of penalties but as the half went on the Selkirk put on the pressure and just before half time Scott MacDonald opened the scoring and at half time it was 5 points to Nil.

The Youth Club started positively in the second half and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and MacDougall slotted over. This seemed to settle the team down and they increased their lead shortly after when after some good pressure Robert MacGregor burst through the Berwick defence to score with MacDougall converting.. Berwick fought back and had some chances but could not break down the Youth Club defence with everyone giving their all. Berwick seemed to be beginning to tire and in the last 10 minutes of the game the Youth Club scored further tries from Andrew Renwick and substitute Mark Dogan with MacDougall adding a conversion to make the final score 27 points to Nil. The boys were relieved to get their 2006/07 league campaign up and running with a well earned win.
Next game is on Saturday at Victoria Park against Tynedale kick off 3pm. Come along and support the ‘Club’ and see their new strips.
